When you live in a city, you never get to see the whole story. You catch fragments of conversations on your way to an appointment. A fleeting glimpse of strangers sitting on a bus as it passes by. Buildings are too large to take in all at once and their windows become little boxes, each holding a separate play. The city is never boring, never truly lonely. There is always something happening at the edge of your vision, something half-heard, half-seen. It gives you food for thought and space to fill in what reality leaves out.

Anna van Oosterom is a collage artist.
Working with her own visual material, combined with found images, paint, chalk and fragments of paper, she constructs new realities. Her compositions do not necessarily follow logic, nor can they always be traced back to a recognisable place or situation. Instead, they exist somewhere between the familiar and the imagined. The influence of the Old Masters can be felt in her work, in their use of perspective, colour and composition, without ever becoming imitation. To bring a sense of lightness into the world she creates a touch of absurdity, which is never far away.
