I paint with Watercolour because of its versatility and immediacy, which is how I like to work. It also offers the challenge to use a traditional medium in a non-traditional way. I work quickly, mostly from intuition pulling from a wide breadth of my interests including the spiritual, poetry, literature, mythology, music as well as drawing from my own personal experiences. The black background represents a liminal/thin space. The bold colours I work with exaggerate the space as somewhere ‘beyond’, but at the same time its familiarity makes it present and with us in the real world. The final pieces which evolve sit beyond language and reason.

Celestial and Ethereal Horse

These works originated from the idea of winter being a contradictory time. On the one hand it is traditionally a time for introspection, a deep darkness where we come closer to and commune with our spirits, ghosts and past. But it is also a time of illumination, light and celebration. As the sun takes a rest and darkness takes over, we light up our worlds with colour and sparkle and hope for the future.
