Rebecca Meanley
23 x 18 cm
These small abstract paintings are made by combining painting and mono-printing processes, allowing for haphazard mark-making and the complex layering of colours and textures. Unusual fabrics such as organza and muslin are initially impregnated with cellulose distemper paint beginning an improvisational dialogue that is continued with oil paint through various methods of application. Scratching, marking, scoring and pressing are activities that occur on the printing plate captured by mono-printing. The marks gathered at this stage are continued into painting that is highly gestural and intuitive. The work is abstract but begins to evoke other-worldly imagery, microcosms or places in the imagination, as entirely unique compositions emerge.
Rebecca Meanley is an artist, writer, researcher and senior lecturer. Her practice-based PhD at The Glasgow School of Art explores the intersection of autobiographical and experimental writing and an expanded abstract painting through a navigation of the visual-aesthetic-literary device of the mesh. Rebecca’s writing features in the 2026 edition and the 2025 edition of The Yellow Paper, published by Art Writing at The Glasgow School of Art. Recent projects include a Residency in the Barnes Garage Space at GSA in July 2026 and a Residency in The Drawing Room, GSA in July 2025, both culminating in solo exhibitions. Recent group shows include Palimpsest at The Annex Gallery, GSA, Glasgow in 2026, Small is Beautiful with Flowers, London, in 2024 and 2025; Encounters at The London Art Fair in 2023, and The Aesthetics of Enchantment, London, 2022.
