Paul Newman
These works are part of Paul Newman’s ongoing series of ‘Interior studies’, exploring slow, fractured journeys through paint. Ambiguous landscapes drawn from the imagination are presented in a state of flux, moving between compositional order and chaos. Motifs include the horse separated from Don Quixote and cellular structures suggesting the microscopic landscapes within the body.
Newman’s practice encompasses drawing, painting and performance, exploring architectural and psychological ruins alongside references to cinema, literature and Romantic landscape painting. His work moves between abstraction and figurative landscape, often juxtaposing imagined worlds with urban infrastructure.
Paul Newman is based in Birmingham. He is a member of Contemporary British Painting and a lecturer in Fine Art at Loughborough University. His work is held in collections including The New Art Gallery Walsall and collections in China. Recent exhibitions include Vista, The Core, Solihull, curated by Ruth Millington; Surreal Solihull, Midlands Art Centre, Birmingham; and The Wrexham Painting Prize (all 2026).
