Mali Morris
18 x 23 cm
These paintings, Sidedtack (Lilac), Moonlight and Sidestack, were made in the Autumn of 2026, in Southern France. I was immediately affected by the colours of the area, the blues of the distant hills against the brighter sky, and by the contrasts of agricultural geometries set against wilder nature. I think the light of the place, and its visual sensations, are intrinsic to the works I made there.
I think of painting as a never-ending process, an investigation into what I find beguiling and mysterious about pictorial structures, which take in the world, are related to it, but have their own language of light, space and boundary.
Born in north Wales in 1945, Mali Morris is a painter who has been showing nationally and internationally since her first major exhibitions at the Serpentine Summer Show 3, London, 1977 and the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, 1979. She has held over 40 solo shows, and has been included in numerous group shows, at the Barbican, Hayward Gallery, Serpentine Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, Whitworth Gallery Manchester, Museum of Wales Cardiff, as well as a number overseas. Her work is held in many public and private collections. Her recent survey solo shows were at the Ikon, Birmingham in 2023, and the Hatton Gallery Newcastle, 2024 -25. In 2010 she was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts and shows annually in their Summer Exhibitions.
