Phil King (b.1965) is a British artist living and working in France, whose practice encompasses painting and sculpture across a diverse range of materials, including oil, acrylic, vinyl, canvas and welded steel. His work moves between abstraction and figuration, exploring landscape, pattern, gesture and ornament through richly tactile surfaces. Holes, found elements and layered paint become integral to his compositions, creating a dialogue between image, object and physical space. Drawing on influences ranging from African art and Romanesque ornament to Cézanne, Matisse, Braque, Pollock and Guston, King has developed a distinctive visual language over more than twenty years. He holds an MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths and a BA in Painting from Bath Academy of Art, and is Executive Editor of Turps and MASS magazines, contributing regularly to art writing and exhibition catalogues.
