Eugene Palmer (b. 1955) is a British-Jamaican artist living and working in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in Birmingham, he studied at Wimbledon School of Art and Goldsmiths, where his early interest in Abstract Expressionism developed into figuration. Closely associated with the BLK Art Group, Palmer has developed a distinctive painting practice centred on people, drawing on photographs from family albums, popular culture and the media as starting points for exploring identity, race and representation. His paintings often employ collage, repetition and reworking of photographic imagery, examining how images are mediated and how communities and individuals are perceived and categorised. His work is held in public and private collections including the Arts Council Collection and Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Palmer is represented by Ed Cross Gallery.
