Ondřej Rypáček is a London-based painter whose meticulously layered oil paintings hover between figuration and abstraction. Suggesting spaces, structures, faces and figures that remain just beyond the surface, the works create a compelling sense of movement towards something that is never quite revealed. Their layers, textures and colours establish a hidden rhythm and internal logic, creating a sense of movement without progress. This is the state of being within infinity: infinitely deep and yet impossible to move through. Rypáček’s rigorous, iterative process of building and folding paint mirrors this sense of endless accumulation and repetition. His background in theoretical computer science, including a PhD from the University of Nottingham, further informs the structural coherence underlying the apparent spontaneity of his paintings.
