Sara Lee Roberts is a London-based artist whose paintings explore the relationship between landscape, light and the history of painting. Following a three-month residency at Monet’s Gardens in Giverny in 2025, her recent abstract works draw on reflections through interwoven forms, rhythms and luminous colour. For Roberts, light is the true subject: colours interact and generate a glow, each continually affecting the balance of the whole. Her work draws on historical painting, particularly the ethereal light of Watteau, while remaining an intuitive and contemporary response to the act of painting. This dialogue with the Old Masters has long informed her practice, including her 2024 Royal Collection Trust residency during Drawing the Renaissance at the King’s Gallery. Her work is held in public and private collections, and she is a senior tutor and alumni tutor at the Royal Drawing School.
