Alice Macdonald is a London-based artist whose diaristic paintings and works on paper draw on historical literature, classic cinema, mythology, fairytales, memory and people from her own life. Fascinated by human behaviour, emotion and relationships, she explores psychological states through a cinematic and often melodramatic language, while acknowledging the impossibility of fully knowing another person’s inner world. Her jewel-like works on paper possess an intimate, voyeuristic quality, while recent paintings incorporate cut and pinned hessian, creating tactile, fragile surfaces that emphasise the constructed nature of the image. She has also begun working with ceramics, whose malleability complements her dynamic approach to painting. Macdonald studied at Falmouth University and the Royal Drawing School and has undertaken residencies in the UK, India and Italy. She has exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, and has received the Great Art Prize and the RWS Young Artist Award. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in Seoul, and at London Art Fair.
