The title come from a short piano piece by Pierre Boulez written in 1994. It echoes the music’s rapid tempo shifts and dynamic, colour contrasts which are encountered as the eye moves across the painting.
Sharon Hall’s paintings use reduced geometry and colour to create movement and spatial complexity. Interested in the instability and interaction of adjacent colours, she develops compositions through linear divisions and diagonal grids that can suggest shallow, illusionistic spaces, informed in part by Italian wall painting and trompe l’oeil. Working intuitively through looking, adjusting and responding to colour and space, Hall allows each painting to evolve through an open-ended dialogue with its making, often evoking place or the changing effects of light on architecture.
Sharon Hall (b. 1954, UK) studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, and received a French Government Scholarship in Paris and the Rome Scholarship in Painting at the British School at Rome. She has also received the Shelagh Cluett Trust Award (2024) and an Individual Support Grant from the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, USA (2025). Recent exhibitions include The Shape of Time, Vivienne Roberts Projects, London (2026); Intervals, Stanza251 Galeria, Florence (2025); Meeting Points, Benjamin Rhodes Arts, London (2024); and Across Colour, Emma Hill Eagle Gallery, London (2021).
