Archie Franks (b.1983) is a British painter whose work explores familiar cultural motifs, including fairgrounds, food and sport, through a heightened sense of unreality. Drawing on the atmospheric lighting of Fragonard, the imagery of food advertising and the still-life tradition of Caravaggio, his richly textured paintings combine nostalgia, pleasure and decadence with an underlying sense of unease. Franks studied at City & Guilds of London Art School and the Royal Academy Schools, and was awarded the Sainsbury Scholarship in Painting at the British School at Rome in 2013 and the Jerwood Painting Fellowship in 2016. In 2025 he was selected for the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery. He lives and works in south east London.
