Ruth Helen Smith (b.1994) is a London-based artist whose painting explores the relationship between abstraction and figuration, often using trees and the spaces glimpsed through them to consider depth, perception and the imagination. Her plein air practice is rooted in direct observation and a desire to create tangible, material responses to experience. She studied Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art and Figurative Painting at the Heatherley School of Fine Art. Smith has exhibited at venues including the Ruth Borchard Collection, Mall Galleries, Art Pavilion Mile End and Thelma Hulbert Gallery, and has undertaken residencies at Battersea Power Station, Canary Wharf and Limehouse. She is a founding director of Ruth Smith Gallery and co-founding director of Red Mud Arts.
