Melissa Alley (b.1962) is a London-based artist whose practice explores the relationship between painting, mesmerism, trance and the unseen. Her paintings are informed by her training in mesmerism and hypnotherapy, as well as her long-standing engagement with automatic and improvisational processes. Working intuitively, Alley seeks to give form to intangible energies, memories and histories, creating works that connect the visible with the unseen. Her recent exhibition one eye sees, the other feels, draws on specific locations and their histories, incorporating mesmerised water into the painting process. Alley studied Fine Art Painting at Central Saint Martins and has exhibited widely in London, including at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and her work is held in collections in the UK, USA and Australia.
