Humphrey Ocean RA (b. Sussex, 1951) studied at art schools in Tunbridge Wells, Brighton and Canterbury. From 1971 to 1973 he was bass player with Kilburn and the Highroads. In 1988 he travelled to Northern Brazil with the anthropologist Stephen Nugent, resulting in the book Big Mouth: The Amazon Speaks, published by Fourth Estate. Elected a Royal Academician in 2004, Ocean was Royal Academy Professor of Perspective from 2012 to 2020. His work has been exhibited extensively, including at Tate Liverpool, The Whitworth, the National Portrait Gallery, Dulwich Picture Gallery, The Courtauld Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts. His projects include Life Class with Artangel, Art Everywhere with the Art Fund, and advising on Mike Leigh’s film Mr Turner. In 2019 a major monograph, Humphrey Ocean, was published by RA Publications, followed by Humphrey Ocean: AFRICA in 2025. His work is held in major public collections including the British Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Galleries Scotland and the Government Art Collection. He lives and works in London.
