Jonathan Schofield is a London-based painter whose work explores colour as both form and psychological expression. His paintings emerge from visual associations, memory, photography, cinema and poetry, often transforming fleeting encounters and impressions of modern life into atmospheric, open-ended compositions. Working without preparatory sketches, Schofield builds and dismantles each painting through a process of scraping, wiping and repainting, allowing the surface to develop as a palimpsest. His paintings occupy a space between the observed and imagined, evoking what he describes as a ‘waking dream’, where moments remain suspended and unresolved. Born in Manchester, Schofield studied MA Fine Art (Painting) at the Royal College of Art, where he was taught by Peter Doig, John Stezaker, Sean Scully and Helen Chadwick. Following a successful career as a Creative Director, he returned to painting full-time in 2014. His work is held in public, corporate and private collections internationally. Recent solo exhibitions include The Defiance of Summer at Vivienne Roberts Projects (2025) and exhibitions with Serena Morton Gallery.
