Andrew Hewish (b.1973) is a London-based artist and curator whose interdisciplinary practice encompasses painting, drawing, collage, film and sculpture. His work explores material, line, site and the studio, allowing images and objects to emerge through processes of chance, movement and discovery. The concept of ‘drift’ is central to his practice, reflecting an openness to the unpredictable behaviour of materials and the connections that develop between works. His enigmatic compositions evoke the natural world, architecture, memory and monuments, balancing a sense of archaism and lyricism with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. He holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art. He founded the Centre for Recent Drawing in 2004 and was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the arts in 2021.
